9781893063051: Jamieson's Shetland Knitting Book 3 (v. 3)

This new collection from Jamieson's begs a question that has become apparent in our recent knitting resources history. Which is more important, the beauty of the book and its look or the success of the patterns and their knitter appeal? Quality material, a variety of challenging designs, and the pleasure of knitting show through on every page. A section of traditional lace shawls, many cozy jackets and pullovers, some fanciful felt bags, and innovative patchwork, constructed garments are all heightened by the vast palette of yarns. Yet again for Jamieson's, both sides of the question are accomplished here.

Review:

No. 116, June 2007 A large, 21 x 30cm paperback with 112 pages and some beautiful photographs of the Shetland Islands. Originally aimed at the North American market, the book includes an account of a trip to Shetland in 2003. As the 22 patterns are the work of 8 different designers there is a variety of styles: a man's sweater in classic fisherman's rib lies between the same covers as an almost-Tyrolean quilted cardigan. Garter-stitch patchwork and a lace shawl are followed by felted bags. The patterns are intended for Jamieson's Shetland wool, so there is more information about puffins than there is about yardages and yarn substitution. Nevertheless, it contains patterns that are not available elsewhere. Lesley Fidler SlipKnot Sept 07 The Shetland Isles is renowned for its rich history of hand knitting, and these 22 stylish patterns, collected under the famous Jamieson name, showcase that heritage beautifully. The traditional designs sit very well with the more contemporary, and all are beautifully photographed against the wild, rocky coastline of Sonoma, northern California. Patterns include jackets, pullovers, shawls, vests and three lovely bags, all courtesy of the self-named Two Old Bags - Katie Nagorney and Ann Swanson. Although the book is written in the American style, UK needle sizes are also provided. Shellye McKinney describes in wonderful detail her visit to the lace knitters on the islands, too.
