My intention in writing this book is to provide a clear, concise account of how I applied my skills in medicine and science to a phenomenon that has not been looked at seriously by the scientific and medical establishments. This resulted in the most astonishing findings of any related research to date.

Yes, there have been many investigations of UFOs and hundreds of books and articles written about the phenomenon. And, yes, there have been a few notable scientists who have performed some of those investigations, such as astronomer Dr. J. Allen Hynek, atmospheric physicist Dr. James D. MacDonald, computer scientist Dr. Jacques Valle, psychiatrist Dr. John Mack, M.D., and nuclear physicist Dr. Stanton Friedman. But fifty years after the modern UFO era began, the phenomenon remains mysterious, because, for the most part, mainstream science and medicine regard it and its study as foolish, fringe pseudoscience. If the field were to be studied seriously by those establishments, there would be multi-million dollar funding of a well-planned and coordinated global research effort. Instead, ufology gets along as best it can with minimal funding raised largely by public membership in various UFO research organizations and by small grants to individuals from daring philanthropic individuals and funds.

The story of my own research efforts is one of coincidence, driving curiosity and struggle against numerous obstacles, including the search for funding. I don't mean to glorify myself or make grandiose claims, yet I feel in all honesty and humility that I have made a significant breakthrough in solving the question "Are we alone in the universe?"

Harvard psychiatrist John Mack, whom I noted above, writes in his book Abduction:

When we explore phenomena that exist at the margins of accepted reality, old words become imprecise or must be given new meanings. Terms like "abduction," "alien," "happening," and even "reality" itself, need redefinition lest subtle distinctions be lost.
