Darwin Payne is professor emeritus of communications at Southern Methodist University. He is a former journalist in Dallas and holds a PhD in American Studies from the University of Texas in Austin. His biography of Owen Wister (Owen Wister: Gentleman of the East, Chronicler of the West), won the Texas Institute of Letters Award for the best non-fiction book of the year by a Texas author. He also has written a biography of the historian/editor Frederick Lewis Allen. In recent years he has concentrated on Dallas history, with other books being As Old As Dallas Itself (a history of the legal profession in Dallas) and (co-author) From Prairie to Planes (a history of DFW International Airport).Review:
