A successful trip into the wilderness does not require being in top shape, using high-tech gear, or traveling to the farthest edges of the earth.
It does require that you simply get out there.
Backcountry travel has as many variations as cooking, music, or driving. You might carry a 60-pound pack and trek for nine days or a tight, 20-pound pack and go for two weeks. You may never go overnight in your life, choosing day hiking without a cumbersome pack, just as you may prefer a backcountry entree of fresh asparagus in hollandaise sauce lightly dusted with paprika -- or two generous handfuls of nuts and raisins for dinner. However you choose to go out there, it is merely important that you do it.
There is something indefinably different about the natural world beyond the streets and sidewalks of civilization. The wilderness does not lack complexity or difficulty, but it is quick to reveal its rhythms.
If you don't know what I mean, step outside one night, just out the front door. Hold your hand against the sky long enough for the stars to move between your fingers. Now you know.
Discover the difference in the scatter of forest leaves, stacks of water-driven cobbles, the passage of clouds. If you go out there, it will be inevitable. So find the place and go.
