Comics artist Jack Kirby died more than a decade ago but lives on through the many popular characters he created, including Captain America, the Fantastic Four, and the Hulk, and in the pages of the Jack Kirby Collector, a labor-of-love magazine in which fans document and celebrate his work. The fifth collection of the zine includes commentary on his stories, studies of his drawing style, and interviews with him, artists who collaborated with him, and others influenced by him, including his contemporary Gil Kane, Hellboy creator Mike Mignola, and Batman animator Bruce Timm. Although the superheroes Kirby drew for Marvel and DC in the 1960s and '70s are most often in the spotlight, Kirby's female characters (he and Joe Simon cocreated the romance-comics genre), villains like Dr. Doom and Galactus, and short-lived projects from the waning years of his career are also covered. Plenty of Kirby artwork appears, much of it in unlinked, pencil form to provide rare views of its original, undiluted power. Even nonfans may be impressed. Gordon Flagg
