First volume originally published by Pinkham Press, Boston, 1914. Second volume incomplete & unpublished at time of writing because of untimely death of author, 1926. This combined edition, with new index, by Global Heritage Press, Milton, 2000. Historical reprint on acid-free paper, bound in burgundy premium-grade case binding with gilt stamping on the cover and the spine. | 353 pp | 7" X 9.5" | Author, William Elgood Smallfield (22 October 1861 - 21 April 1926) was a man of many accomplishments: mayor of Renfrew for several years in the early 1900s, staunch supporter of the Renfrew Fair, leader in the Sons of Temperance movement, and noted journalist, editor and publisher. But his greatest contribution to the town of Renfrew, according to his obituary in the Ottawa 'Citizen', was his book on the history of Renfrew, Ontario. Mr. Smallfield retired in 19I9 and had his articles published in book form as volume one of 'The Story of Renfrew'. He intended to carry on with the history in volume two but ill health intervened and he died in 1926. His son William began a sequel but his untimely death in 1928 cut his effort short. In fact his section of the book ends mid-sentence. This book includes the content of the original book plus the section begun by William Smallfield junior. The two manuscripts provide an exceptional view of life in Renfrew from the earliest days. One word of caution - some of the references in volume one were left unchanged from the text in the original articles even though they were no longer correct in terms of property ownership. Mr. Smallfield clarified many of the discrepancies in his NOTES RESPECTING CERTAIN LOCATIONS MENTIONED IN THE STORY immediately following his PREFACE to volume one. There are descendants of the people mentioned in this history scattered throughout North America and genealogists and historians may be grateful for this remarkable history.
