Review:
We always knew Canadian history could be fun, and Will Ferguson proves it in his second edition of Canadian History for Dummies. Approachable in the extreme, this text is fun because of Ferguson's undisputed gift for unearthing our national quirkiness and for illuminating those parts of our heritage that make us a unique people. At first the academic reader might register surprise at the choice of author for the Canadian history text in this wildly popular series, but this is truly a match made in editorial heaven. With his arrestingly titled Bastards and Boneheads and Beauty Tips from Moose Jaw, Ferguson has made a strong claim to being the light-hearted guardian of our national popular culture, and this book is true to form, with anecdotes, asides, bullets, and a fast-paced style this book makes Canadian history more user-friendly than ever before. Behind it all, however, is serious and comprehensive Canadian history. Ferguson acknowledges the help of Don Smith--one of our truly great academic historians and textbook authors--and his expertise is evident throughout. But, as headings like "Western alienation or that #%@!* Trudeau" (382) and "Pemmican--Delicious and Nutritious" show, this is Ferguson's book, featuring his unparalleled gift at striking just the right note --William Newbigging
About the Author:
Will Ferguson was born and raised in the former fur-trapping community of Fort Vermillon, deep in the backwoods of northern Alberta. "Closer to the Arctic Circle than the American border." as he likes to say. Will has lived and worked in almost every region of Canada, from the Okanagan Valley of B.C. to the farmlands of rural Quebec, from Saskatoon to sourthern Ontario, from Manitoba to P.E.I.

He went to South America as a volunteer with Canada World Youth, and later spent five years in Japan. He has travelled across northern China, Korea, Indonesia, and mainland Malaysia — but through it all has remained stubbornly Canadian.

Will has a degree in Fine Arts (Film & Television) from York University in Toronto, and has worked in marketing/publicity, and even — briefly — as a journalist. His debut book, a humorous look at Canadian culture entitled, Why I Hate Canadians, was a surprise bestseller that allowed him to change careers suddenly in mid-stream. Ever since then, he has been a full-time writer, specializing in travel and Canadiana.

Will is also the author of The Hitchhiker's Guide to Japan, a travel guide; I Was a Teenage Katima-victim!, a hilarious memoir of his days as a cross-Canada youth volunteer; Hokkaido Highway Blues, a travel narrative; and Bastards & Boneheads: Canada's Glorious Leaders Past and Present, a frank and funny look at Canada's prime ministers and the history of Canada. He is also the co-author of The Girlfriend's Guide to Hockey, a lighthearted and informative guide to Canada's favourite sport.

Although he considers himself an "honorary Maritimer" (his family's roots are in Cape Breton and he lived for several years in the Fundy region of New Brunswick), Will recently returned to his home province of Alberta. He now lives in Calgary with his wife, Terumi, and their three-year-old son, Alex.
