he Talbot District was created in March of 1837 and was officially proclaimed in December of 1837 when the jail and court house in Simcoe had been completed. Marriage returns for Norfolk County and Walpole and Rainham townships had to be returned to the Clerk of the Peace in the District Town of Simcoe. Although the Talbot District was abolished in May of 1849, the clerk of the new county of Norfolk continued to register marriages in the Talbot District Marriage Register. In 1851 the clerk for the new county of Haldimand created a separate register for Haldimand County where marriages performed in Haldimand County after 1851 were recorded. All marriages performed in the Talbot District before it was created in 1837 were recorded in the London District Marriage Register 1795-1841 (Volume 4 Part 1). If you cannot find the marriage you are looking for in the Talbot District Marriage Register make sure you check the surrounding Districts (Niagara ,Gore, Brock and London Districts). For example, marriages of people from Brantford in the Gore District and Dereham in the Brock District are recorded in the Talbot District Marriage Register. Townships that were part of the Talbot District included: Charlotteville, Houghton, Middleton, Rainham, Townsend, Walpole, Walsingham, Windham and Woodhouse. An example of some of the towns and townships where marriages occurred and were reported in the Talbot District Register include: Middleton, Windham, Norwich (Brock District), Woodhouse, Townsend, Charlotteville, Oakland (Brock District), Oxford Township (Brock District), Walsingham, Houghton, Walpole, Rainham, Dereham (Brock District), Burford (Brock District), Brantford (Gore District), Clinton (Niagara District), Simcoe, Blenheim (Brock District), Dumfries (Gore District), Wainfleet (Niagara District), Saltfleet (Niagara District), Town of Paris (Gore District), Bayham (London District), Tuscarora (Gore District), etc...
