Following the success of irrepressible story teller Marijan Megla's first book, Vajolin/ Violin, we bring you this lyrical invocation of the Romany way of life. Here in the Gypsy Messenger, we are treated once again to the Croatian people and scenes that Megla makes his very own, this time concentrating on the gypsy villages of his childhood. Megla's characters speak to us in the real voices and images of their daily lives.
Marijan Megla is a Canadian from Crotia with a powerful storytelling voice. Frustrated with the illogic of English spelling, Megla developed a phonetic code to put his spoken English on paper. Standard English versions of his poems serve as a key to crack teh phonetic code. This connection between teh reader and teh author's voice is literate and intensely intimate.
The book is illustrated with photgraphs drawn for The Rom Project of Sima Khorrami. Throughout her career, Khorrami has been fascinated with Romany peop-le and lives, and has travelled widely to photograph them. Her intese and dramatic portraits of Romany life are the perfect complement to the text.
