Grade 10 Up-This informative book lays out the guidelines of a program that is used throughout the country by teachers and counselors. It was begun by the author in an effort to educate young women about how to prevent violence against them, and then expanded to a similar program for teen boys in order to stop violent actions before they start or be equipped to deal with such tendencies. The volume is divided by major sections: "Heart" (assertiveness); "Mind" (power, gender, sexuality, relationships and intimacy, self-esteem, emotions, sexual harassment, and sexual assault); "Spirit" (the core of the issues); and "Body" (the tools used in the SafeTeen program). Each chapter contains descriptive scenarios, quotes, and reasons why these actions occurred. The chapters interconnect with one aspect of a situation leading to the next chapter. The book is tied up at the end with role-play exercises and suggestions for developing skills that will help young people be strong and stand up for themselves. Written primarily for adults as an introductory "manual" for use at school or home, this book will also be very revealing to teens. It should be available to all in the hope that the techniques introduced will stop the increased violent actions toward women as well as men.

Gr. 7-12. Roberts, who has worked in violence prevention for more than 25 years, offers this guidebook based on her assertiveness programs for boys and girls called SafeTeen. The book takes a broad view of violence, looking at the roots, identifying potentially dangerous behavior, and always offering teens strategies to protect themselves and diffuse and confront situations--from small misunderstandings to outright assault. Roberts' holistic approach also includes discussion of gender stereotypes, self-esteem, handling cliques and social pressures, acknowledging and transforming emotions, and differentiating between "good sex" and harmful sex. Occasionally, Roberts' information doesn't properly stress the importance of context: sarcasm, for instance, is listed as an abusive behavior. But overall, this is an excellent resource that will support and educate teens about their most basic rights and responsibilities. Poems, quotes, and practical exercises add further appeal.
