In the first volume of Difficulty at the Beginning, John Dupre is a student at Raysburg Military Academy, and being trained by his best friend to be a perfect Socratic athlete. Together they want to experience all of life - athletics, philosophy, beer and the quest for Truth. Fueled by Kerouac, James Dean and St. Augustine, they are out for experience and suffering, and that's just what they're going to get.

About the Author:

Keith Maillard was born in Wheeling, WV in 1942, moved to Canada in 1970. Throughout his career, he has won many literary awards and written several novels, including The Clarinet Polka, Light in the Company of Women and Gloria. He teaches at the University of British Columbia, and lives with his wife and two daughters.

From Booklist:

Maillard grew up in West Virginia, the setting of this first volume in a four-volume bildungsroman. To be titled Difficulty at the Beginning, the work will combine new writing with early, unpublished material and a reworking of the author's first two novels. The quartet will chart the social history of the 1950s and 60s through the life of middle-class protagonist John Dupre, who, at the outset, is an earnest teenage student at a military academy. He and his best friend, Polish American Lyle, are obsessed with running and their desire to experience life. In many ways a typical Jack Kerouac-reading teen of the times, John is remarkable in at least two regards: until he was 14, he secretly wanted to be a girl, and at 16 and again at 18--still thinking of himself as a boy-girl--he falls in love with . . . two 14-year-old girls. But he's also in love with words and ideas and his desire to become a writer. Will he? Stay tuned for the concluding volumes, scheduled for publication in 2006. Michael Cart

Book Description Brindle and Glass Publishing, Ltd, Canada, 2005. Paperback. Condition: New. Language: English . Brand New Book. A Globe and Mail Top 100 Pick of 2006 In this, the first volume of Difficulty at the Beginning, John Dupre is a student at Raysburg Military Academy, where his best friend Lyle Ledzinski is training him to be a perfect Socratic athlete: A sound mind in a sound body. Together they want to experience all of life -- athletics, philosophy, beer, the quest for Truth, and most of all, those mysterious creatures that seem to come from another planet: girls. By their junior year they ve taken to hitch-hiking around, fired up on Kerouac, James Dean and St. Augustine, and their horizons begin to expand like an endless sunrise. They re out for experience and suffering, and that s just what they re going to get. Written as though on the back of the pages of Gloria (shortlisted for the Governor General s Award, 1999), Running depicts the lives of young men in late-1950s America with humour, pathos, and muscle. Taken on its own or as the prelude to Difficulty at the Beginning, it s a memorable and invigorating piece of writing that shows how the smug, grey culture of the 1950s was shattered forever with three little words.
