Temperament is at the core of how we see and respond to our world. It is why children respond in their own way to their environment and others in it. It is the significant reason that children act differently even within the same family -- in spite of having the same parents, culture and environment. Individual differences in temperament among family members can also be a major factor in making family life positive . . . or stressful.
We know that every child is unique. Take Your Temperament! is designed to help you put that reality into action in an engaging and meaningful way. It invites parents to explore how they react to the world -- and do so without guilt or shame.
This workbook should really be called a "fun book." It is designed to be an interactive opportunity for you and your child to explore each other better. In the end, you will have had the opportunity to:
* Understand and define the nine temperament traits;
* Pinpoint the traits that are the most challenging for you;
* Map your similarities and differences;
* Appreciate rather than judge your differences;
* Work as a team to generate greater understanding and solutions to improve the "goodness of fit; and
* Laugh and have fun as you grow in awareness of each other.

About the Author:

Nanci Burns, MSW, RSW
Like most intense and highly active people, Nanci juggles many roles in her life: social worker, educator, researcher, trainer, parent, and triathlete! With humour and sensitivity, she has worked with both children and adults over the past 30 years to bring about positive change and a message of hope.
She brings to her work an expertise in family dynamics, resiliency and prevention approaches, both at the micro and systems level. She has worked in the US and Canada at the local and national levels. Most recently, she works with the public school board in Ottawa.
Nanci is married with two university-age children and a dog. All have played a significant role in her understanding of temperament!
She has also co-written Nusery Crimes: Sexual Abuse in Day Care.

Nancy Rubenstein, ECE, RT
When I was six years old, my aunt had a baby boy. My teddy bears and dolls were left in the toy box as I devoted myself to his care. Many years later, I still delight in watching babies and young children as they explore the world and learn EVERYTHING!
Nancy says she took a detour in life when she majored in International Relations at Vassar College, spending her third year at the American University in Cairo. However, she later completed an Early Childhood Education degree and an ECE Resource Teacher diploma. She has worked in nursery schools, a LINC program for the children of newcomers to Canada, and a Headstart program. She has also served as the director of a daycare centre for teen parents.
Three years ago, Nancy took on a new role -- Nancy the Nana. She now has four grandchildren and she revels in the joy they bring. She says she is indebted to her family for teaching her so much about the strength of family ties!

Most parents know that raising their children is the most important job they will ever undertake. Many parents are uncertain and unsure about what their young children need. Many find themselves at a loss to understand how their children can be so different from one another. Many have found that simple prescriptions just don't fit their son or daughter. Take Your Temperament! is essential reading. Between the covers of this workbook, you will discover why you should, and how you can, respect and respond to each of your children as individuals -- each with his or her own talents and potential. This is, after all, the greatest gift you might hope to give your children. --Robert Glossop, CM, PhD, former Executive Director of Programs and Research for the Vanier Institute of the Family
