Presents a colorful flower and vegetable garden

From School Library Journal:

PreSchool-Grade 1-A "colourful" little British import with a plethora of modest paper engineering (three pop-ups, one rondel, one pull-tab) that presents a flower-and-vegetable garden for young children. While pleasant enough, the average text and illustrations and the fragile nature of the book place this on a secondary wish list. Consider instead the truly golden oldies such as Lois Ehlert's Planting a Rainbow (1988) and Growing Vegetable Soup (1987, both Harcourt) or Anne Rockwell's How My Garden Grew (Macmillan, 1982; o.p.) for the youngest, and Rosalind Creasy's equally colorful Blue Potatoes, Orange Tomatoes (Sierra, 1994) or Judith Caseley's Grandpa's Garden Lunch (Greenwillow, 1990) for slightly older children. And for both groups, bean in hand, Anne Rockwell's One Bean (Walker, 1998).

From Kirkus Reviews:

Burns and Apperley's garden is a happy and busy place. In the spring, rabbits hop about, apple trees are in bloom, tulips pop out of the ground, seedlings start to sprout. Summer brings more flowers and a host of cartoony butterflies, bees, spider s, and a vegetable garden that is becoming copious. A final pop-up page shows a vegetable garden, flower garden, and insects in profusion. Onlookers can pull tabs to make beans climb the pole or turn a wheel to make butterflies and bees circle a magenta b loom, even though the engineering feels a little fragile. The book provides a real sense of activity, change, and growth as the seasons progress and the gardens mature. Snippets of botany, appearing in textual asides, can be highlighted or ignored, depend ing on audience age and interest. (Picture book. 3-6) -- Copyright ©1998, Kirkus Associates, LP.
