Tales from the Pit is set in Dark Ages Scotland and the north of England. Four prisoners are held in the Pit-the condemned cell-in the Bernician town of Bamburg, awaiting execution on the gallows come morning. These erstwhile companions are Margaret, a prostitute; Fergus, a freeman and farmer; Alwynia, a girl of noble birth; and Revile, an adventurer and assassin. To pass the dark time before the dawn, the assassin relates his adventures: ten tales of magic, intrigue, murder, war, and bloodshed. The origins of this novel are said to go back to the Dark Ages, reputedly back to a time not long after the events themselves took place. The set of manuscripts from which it was compiled was brought together by Archibald Olrig Campbell in Victorian times, and recently edited by Iain Martin. This will appeal to all who enjoy reading about the days of old, of sorcerers and knights, swordfights and castles.
