From School Library Journal

YA-- Divided into four seasons, this is a chronicle of a year in the lives of a group of humpback, right, and blue whales. Hoyt traces their migration and habits as they make their way from the Caribbean to the coast of Cape Cod. His whales all have names and will seem like old friends to readers, and when 14 of them die from eating toxic-laced mackerel, YAs will feel a personal loss. The biology of the whales themselves is discussed in great detail, as are many related marine creatures, such as barnacles, whale lice, and phytoplankton foods. The text is enhanced by beautiful full-color photographs and reads like a novel. Throughout the entire work, Hoyt's message is clear--the future of the whales, the oceans, and all marine life depends upon the immediate protection of their habitat and the curbing of pollution. Truly poignant and moving.
