Review

This slim 95-page paperback is subtitled, "A complete and utterly unauthorized guide to Buffy the Vampire Slayer"--which says it all. No authorization means no pictures; it's plain, small print throughout. The darkly witty Buffy TV series, spawned by the underrated 1992 movie of the same title, is a hit not only in terms of ratings but among knowledgeable SF/fantasy connoisseurs. Everyone knows the setup by now. Sixteen-year-old American schoolgirl Buffy Summers, eager to be a cheerleader and go on hot dates, inherits the awesome responsibility of wielding the stake as her generation's Slayer of Vampires. These appear with remarkable frequency at Sunnydale High School, since the town was unwisely built on a demonic focus called the Hellmouth. Much blood flows, while longer-term character interactions and story arcs have been admired. The Slayer Files opens with eight brief character profiles and closes with a terse listing of Buffy Web sites, novelizations, and spinoffs. At the staked heart of the book, Peter Mann offers a detailed summary of every episode in the first through third seasons. He quotes occasional scripted lines (Buffy: "We saved the world. I say we party. I mean, I got all pretty!") but mostly has to paraphrase for fear of lawyers. Though workmanlike, the story summaries are--obviously--full of spoilers for Buffy newcomers. One for the fans. --David Langford
