This book covers the lives and careers of five Fitzalans, earls of Arundel and later of Surrey. They ruled over extensive estates in Sussex, Surrey, and Norfolk but were also powerful lords in the Welsh Marches where in their time they tangled with the Mortimers and Owain Glyn Dwr. There was scarcely an event or battle at which the earls of Arundel were not present and they were continuously involved in affairs of State at the highest level, serving as royal councillors, military commanders and ambassadors to kings and popes. They lent considerable sums of money to the Crown to finance its wars with France and were, therefore, instrumental in the conduct of the Hundred Years war.
