9781904671749: Nidotherapy: Harmonising the Environment with the Patient

Nidotherapy is a new concept in mental health. For years we have laboured under the happy notion that with humanity, determination and a little science, we could correct all the disabilities and handicaps associated with psychiatric disorder. But we have over-reached ourselves. A large number of mental disorders are labelled 'chronic', as health professionals have very little impact on their symptoms and course. Nidotherapy is for such people, who often feel they have failed because they have not shared in the heady notion that all can recover. Although we take notice of the environment in mental health, we seldom go about systematically analysing it and changing it to fit the person, so that their well-being and sense of belonging are improved. These processes are the focus of nidotherapy and should give optimism to both practitioners and patients who have been close to abandoning hope. The book discusses among other things: who nidotherapy is for; how to apply nidotherapy; how to perform environmental analysis; and, who can practise nidotherapy. With case studies and exercises (with answers), this book is an excellent guide to the emerging discipline of nidotherapy.

About the Author:

Peter Tyrer is Editor of 'The British Journal of Psychiatry', Professor of Community Psychiatry, Imperial College London, and a pioneer of nidotherapy. He has developed the treatment over many years of psychiatric practice and is the leading authority in the field.

Review:

[T]he book is about careful listening to a person who seems to be ill, to helping him or her find an environment in which to live more comfortably. It is thus very much in a European tradition that involves listening to the life stories of very unusual people, such as hermits or marooned shipwreck survivors, and suspending all judgment of how they lived their lives...This book is thus a road map for listening to and understanding unusual persons without judgment and without classification. --STEFANO PALLANTI, M.D. Florence, Italy - American Journal of Psychiatry - 167:7, July 2010

Peter Tyrer, the author of this book, Nidotherapy, is one of the leading psychiatric writers and researchers of his generation. His academic seniority and contributions to new taxonomies and effective treatments notwithstanding.he has had the courage to call ''Enough'' to the immoderate claims of those contemporary fetishes, evidence based research and expert led treatment guidelines, at least as they apply to the varieties of human distress that continue to evade the ever widening net of such as DSM IV,soon to be V, stamping all as species of psychiatric morbidity.

Dr Tyrer and his associates have decided to pursue the notion that our societies even yet remain sufficiently varied to allow people to bloom if planted in more favourable soil and this is their task. But the methods of helping their patient to find and build their nidus/nest stand in stark contrast to those usual to the inescapable hierarchical features of health care institutions and professions. The necessary exercise of democratic and egalitarian attitudes show their inherent healing character in the course of their application to the process of nidotherapy as described in this book. What is fascinatingly evident from the case studies of nidotherapy is the avoidance of the development of that most destructive and frequent development of orthodox pschotherapies of several types.Unexpectedly,at least to a general psychiatrist with psychoanalytical training such as myself, the establishment of and voyage along the nidopathway lends the opportunity to conduct effective psychotherapy of several types acting outside the transference neurosis with the promise of many consequent benefits, apparent consequences of the naturalistic setting and methods. This slender volume, beautifully written in a pellucid prose style befitting the editor of The British Journal of Psychiatry is recommended to all mental health professionals who feel at their week's end jaded by the unfulfilled promise of their orthodoxies,or,perhaps just a little bored.Nidotherapy has much to learn and much headway to make, but its authors and advocates have grasped things of great importance.Revolutionary perhaps. --Mr. Livingstone
