Jerome Klapka Jerome is best known for his humorous travelogue Three Men in a Boat (To Say Nothing of the Dog), a humorous novel about a trip up the Thames. Jerome was brought up in poverty in London, but the publication of Three Men in a Boat in 1889 made him instantly rich and famous. Later in life, he was popular as a lecturer and was hired in preference to Kipling to be editor of The Idler in 1892. During World War I, he volunteered as an ambulance driver.
"This book wouldn't elevate a cow. I cannot consciously recommend it for any useful purpose whatever. All I suggest is that when you get tired of reading 'the best hundred books', you may take this up for half an hour. It will be a change!"
