'Stories of the Poppies' offers a voice to the Afghanistan generation of our Armed Forces. The stories in this collection are the winning entries in the 2009 FLOW for All short story competition. FLOW for All (The Forces Literary Organisation Worldwide) is dedicated to offering assistance to those who have suffered from the effects of war, especially the suffering shared by servicemen and women, their relatives and their friends. Proceeds from the sales of the book will be used to support FLOW for All, helping them to become a registered charity and to employ counsellors for those in need of care and support. Last year Forces Sweetheart and recent UK chart-topper Dame Vera Lynn agreed to become FLOW for All's official patron, and spoke movingly at the launch in Brighton of the organisation's first poetry anthology 'Voices of the Poppies'. This year, Major-General Tim Cross CBE and Ruth Rayment have kindly written forewords for FLOW for All's books. Major-General Tim Cross CBE is a logistics expert who retired from the British Army in 2006. In his military career he was involved in operational service in Northern Ireland, Cyprus, the Balkans and Iraq, as well as numerous aid relief situations (including refugee camps in Macedonia and Kosovo). Ruth Rayment lost her brother Private Christopher Gordon Rayment through an accidental death in Iraq in 2004.
