Documenting the great transformation of rural Scotland between the early 17th century and 1900, this complete collection of essays by a renowned historian examines why this extraordinary era most often associated with failure, famine, and clearance in Gaeldom is remembered as one of improvement in the Lowlands. Highlighting how the social and economic benefits of revolution prompted increase in production of food and raw materials which in turn sustained the remarkable growth of towns and cities over this period in folk memory of Scotland, the social and cultural costs loomed far larger, with loss of land for many thousands of families and the rise of individualism at the expense of neighborhood. Addressing why both parts of Scotland responded so differently to the revolutionary changes during this period, this fascinating account is a thoughtful insight to an issue at the very heart of the nation's past.

About the Author:

T. M. Devine is the Sir William Fraser Chair of Scottish history and palaeography at the University of Edinburgh, and is the director of the Scottish Centre of Diaspora Studies and Head of School. He is the author of The Scottish Nation.

Review:

"The tragic experience of the Highlanders during the Clearances . . . has been well documented, while the Lowland experience has been relatively overlooked. Professor Tom Devine redresses this balance in his book, examining why both parts of Scotland responded so differently to the transformation of rural Scotland."  —Scottish Art News

Book Description John Donald Publishers Ltd, United Kingdom, 2010. Paperback. Condition: New. Reprint. Language: English . Brand New Book. Social and economic changes included an increase in production of food and raw materials, in turn sustaining the remarkable growth of towns and cities over this period. However, in the folk memory of Scotland the social and cultural costs of the revolution loom much larger: the loss of land for many thousands of families; the rise of individualism and the decline of neighborhood; the death of old rural societies which had formed Scotland s character for many generations. The drama and tragedy of Highland history during this period have attracted many authors, whereas the Lowland experience, that of the majority of Scots, hardly any. This book attempts to redress that balance, and in so doing examines why this extraordinary era, inextricably associated with failure, famine and clearance in Gaeldom, is remembered as one of improvements in the Lowlands, where the folk memory of dispossession, if it ever existed, is long lost in collective amnesia. In so doing, Devine addresses an issue which goes right to the heart of the nation s past. Seller Inventory # ABS9781906566234
