Grass Roots is a novel which traces one season of The Poachers Arms Football Club in the Downham Sunday Football League. The lives and loves of the individuals within the team are examined, with the five main characters featuring strongly in alternate chapters. They are all older members of the team, who have been associated with the club for many years. The season looks promising and Dave is keen to press for promotion with each game throwing up its unique challenges against a background typical of local football with its squabbles and incidents. Throughout the season, the players' personal relationships are kept strictly separate from their football, but this year they begin to overlap with comical, emotional and occasionally tragic results. The underlying theme throughout is that the beer swilling, swearing, macho lifestyles of the main protagonists are held together only by the patience and understanding of the women in their lives.

John Trueman was born in 1947. With post war austerity there was little money around, so the boys on the estate played football in the streets every weekend and evenings until it was dark. He graduated to the local leagues but his skill never matched his enthusiasm, so settled for playing Sunday league football and watching his beloved Swindon Town on Saturdays. He was a window cleaner, computer operator, van driver, building labourer and frozen food salesman before drifting into I.T. project management, but the one constant in his life was football. John now lives in rural central Portugal where he spends his time writing, painting, growing vegetables and drinking cheap beer and even cheaper wine.
