It has been said that the English, not being by nature a religious people, invented cricket to give them some idea of Eternity. This is blatant bluff, though it does indicate that cricket is not to be treated lightly or dismissed merely as a sport.
Bored almost beyond endurance, the uninitiated, watching or even playing cricket will moan, "What's the point of it?" Bluffers know that there is no point to cricket any more than there is a point to tennis, ballet, rose gardens or nouvelle cuisine.
Born in 1938 Nick Yapp still plays cricket regularly (once a year at the Warren Avenue Rec.) in the Annual Political Cricket Match for the Oswald Mosley Cup.
A hurried, anxious bat whose highest score is 84 for Cheam 3rd XI, he has never fulfilled the potential that early days on the beach at Worthing suggested. His slow, tripe bowling, however, had been popular with batspersons all over South London, and he still manages to look hawkish in the field unless the ball comes too near him. He can keep a neat scorebook but is frightened of umpiring.
His earliest cricketing memories are of playing in the back garden, where he and his older brother would pretend to be whole county sides (never Middlesex) and inflict a good deal of damage to the close boarded fence and Mr Smith's rockery next door (serves him right - he never threw the ball back).
A schoolboy member at The Oval in the days when Surrey won the Championship seven years in a row, he remains a devoted Surrey fan. He had to take a double dose of his heart pills when he saw them win the Championship in 1999.
He has his own bat, pads and gloves, and is open to offers.
