Everything has a beginning...and a story behind it. I Am Woman materialized out of the darkest moment of my life, a moment when nothing made sense and the need to understand the purpose of my existence was my most daunting question. When I began writing--back in 2013--I had lost my job as a showgirl and MC in a Fort Lauderdale gay bar. I was a natural at that job, and I thought I had found my calling. Consequently, I found myself lost and without direction when I was fired.
Like many of us, I scrutinized my innermost feelings and thoughts, trying to find the answer to one question: What am I to do now? I read numerous self-help books, searched the internet for testimonials, consulted with my boyfriend--now my husband--for advice, began meditating and praying more often, joined a yoga studio, and even moved. I tried everything I could, just to get my bearings. But time turned out to be my best friend, rather than my enemy.
The answer I sought out revealed itself a year later. One year was sufficient time for me to mature in order to hear and comprehend my personal calling: I had to help others. Surprisingly, the calling was always there, but I failed to hear it time after time. I realized that living and sharing my life was the purpose of my life--it was so simple!
When I first put pen to paper, I promised myself that I would be honest with the world about who I was and where I came from. This promise was crucial in order to effectively help others and have a positive impact on the world. Within my story, I had to detail the glamorous moments and all the excitement, as well as the ugly truths.
Detailing my struggles as a trans woman, my insecurities, and my past alcohol and drug addiction was just as important as detailing my personal victories and ultimate success. Without my personal crises, I would be someone else and this book would only exist in my dreams. The compilation of good and bad experiences that have shaped my life have created I Am Woman and also the woman I am today.
Remarkably, I Am Woman emphasizes that in midst of our loneliness, suffering, and darkness, our hopes and dreams continue to illuminate our path to personal freedom, survival, and ultimately love. I promise you that this book will change you in some way and open your eyes to the various realities of life that exist in the word. It's so easy to live in a self-absorbed bubble or to live and die within the communities that our parents raised us in. But life is more beautiful when we see the world and embrace the diversity that flourishes within it. So I invite you to pick up this book, turn the page, and read it with an open mind. You'll never be the same...
