About the Author

Rosemary grew up in West Berkshire, hunting with the Garth and South Berks, and the Palmer Milburn Beagles as a child.. Her father would come home from work to find his newspaper adorned with drawings. She studied art at the Ruskin School of Fine Art and Drawing, Oxford university. Here she found time to go out with the Christ Church and Farley Hill Beagles, or to go home and hunt.

Rosemary Coates cuts a familiar figure to many hunting both in the UK and in Ireland, accompanied by a small white terrier, which often sits on her shoulder.

Ringer or Dead Ringer

An identical horse that has been switched for another (this is part of a betting scam). Once all-too commonplace, it is harder to do these days as horses now require passports to enter a race, which are held for the duration of the race meeting by the Clerk of the Course. In America racehorses all have a lip tattoo with an identification number to prevent the use of Ringers.
