George Smart was born in 1774 and died a pauper in Frant, Sussex, in 1846. In those years, he worked as a tailor, served as a soldier, raised a family—and, quietly created a series of unforgettable works of art that have come to be seen as great examples of English folk art. On his inclusion in a folk art show at the Tate Britain in 2014, Smart finally received the attention and widespread admiration that was his due—admiration that has culminated in this, the first book dedicated to his life and work. Drawing on the limited sources we have for his life, Jonathan Christie re-creates what we can know about his work and experiences, then goes on to sensitively extrapolate from that and his artwork to give us a fragmented, yet compelling picture of this charming, eccentric outsider artist.

About the Author:

Jonathan Christie is an artist and designer and the creative director at Octopus Books in London.

Review:

"Meet George Smart (1774-1846) and his output of cloth and velvet animals and characters in this wellwritten and well-designed book. Christie pieces together what details are available about this tailor by trade who was also a creative entrepreneur. He illustrates many examples of Smart’s works, particularly variations of Bright, the postman, and a woman he called the 'Goose Woman,' and another image titled Earth Stopper. He discusses Smart’s materials and techniques and his ingenuity as an artist. He also features and discusses the labels, some with a clever poem, that Smart printed to identify his work. Christie also covers Smart’s fame while alive and the rediscovery of Smart’s work in the 20th century. The numerous illustrations help tell the fascinating story of this creative folk artist and his little cloth figures." (Maine Antique Digest)

"A new and definitive study of Smart. Christie has gathered every scrap to dress his portrait of the tailor and his work and he’s done so while enhancing rather than diminishing our pleasure." (The Magazine Antiques)

"A fascinating read and beautifully designed." (Terence Conran)
