Charles F. Fritz Gritzner is Distinguished Professor of Geography at South Dakota State University in Brookings, South Dakota, USA. He is now in his fifth decade of college teaching and research. In addition to teaching, he enjoys research, travel, working with teachers, and writing to share his passion for geography with readers. As a contributor to this volume, he has a wonderful opportunity to combine each of these hobbies. Professor Gritzner has served as both president and executive director of the National Council for Geographic Education and has received the Council s highest honor, the George J.
