About the Author:

“Beyond the East the sunrise, Beyond the West the sea. And east and west the wanderlust That will not let me be.” —Gerald Gould From an early age, I was inclined towards adventure. I remember diligently collecting news paper articles by Col John Hunt, the leader of the British Everest Expedition — 1953, describing the first ascent of Mt. Everest by his team. I dreamt of going on similar expedition someday. I was only 12. My elder brothers chided that by the time I grow up there will be no more adventures left for me to do. I was influenced strongly by books; Books like ‘Man-eaters of Kumaon’ by Jim Corbett, ‘Seven Years in Tibet’ by Heinrich Herrar, ‘Kim’ by Rudyard Kipling. I enjoyed reading about those adventurous undertakings. They all had one thing in common; their Himalayan background. I had enlisted in National Volunteer Force at age 14, though underage, for military training during a school summer vacation. Three years later, I was introduced to the thrills of rock climbing by an ex-platoon mate from that NVF camp. It gradually morphed into a group as more people joined us. Our group went hiking in the hills around Bombay and did rock climbing on some week-ends. During college summer breaks I had been to the Himalayas; Trekking in the Kumaon hills, Tehri, Garhwal and Kullu region. Welcome to this chapter in my memories.
