These poems are beautiful and quiet, and in their seeming slow motion wrap themselves in instantaneous epiphanies that have to do with simply being alive. These poems are also about love and grief, and how that simple arc is played out in the natural world---by animals like deer and hawks that go by in twos and by forces in the prairie that join and part from each other the way lovers do.
Like the poems of Emily Dickinson, who haunts this collection, Campbell writes in an epistolary style that belies the depth of thinking that is engaged. The poems vibrate between human breath and earthly spirit, where transcendence is to be found in even the smallest things around; the trees you prune, the grass that grows underfoot, the breath you take. Human emotions are only part of the whole ecology of things. It is as if the world of our feelings extends to the trees and plants and earth, and even further. Nothing is insignificant.
The gift of this book is how Anne Campbell joins together the sacred and the profane, until we are never sure which might be which, because here both are.---Kristjana Gunnars
