More about the main characters:Tom JadeTom grew up in a military family: Father served in Vietnam. Both grandfathers served in WW2. Never intended to join the military. Didn't know what he wanted to do. Joined the army to keep from getting into trouble, ending up in court. Was never very close to his parents, both practicing Catholics during his childhood years. Father was hard and never said much. Not much affection from either. No closeness. Always felt that they looked at him funny, like they knew he wasn't right. That he had a violent streak. Didn't have many friends as a child and then teenager. Would rather roam the woods and hills and sit under a tree than hang out with others his own age, talking about meaningless crap. They always seemed afraid of him anyway. Wasn't interested in girls really either, except one. A girl in his class called Rebecca Leigh. The only one who looked at him like he was normal. The only one who smiled at him.Dry sense of humor. Wise-cracks a lot. Doesn't appear to take anything seriously, or show much emotion, but underneath it all does. Adept at fighting and killing, almost to the point of appearing to enjoy it, but dislikes doing it. Sees it as necessary, a job. Something he knows he's good at. Would rather do something else, something simple, like driving a truck or building roads and bridges, but realizes fighting and killing is what he's meant to do. Knows how much evil there is in the world, and that someone has to be there to take it on, where others can't.Sees his abilities as a double-edged sword. On the one hand, loves the strength and power and ability he has--half constructed in a lab, half inherited from his father. But on the other, knows that whatever he has in his blood, has in part come from something evil and inhuman. He is torn between wanting to keep his abilities, and wanting them gone, so he can be normal, whatever that is.Rebecca LeighRebecca is an only child and was a military brat like Jade. Her father was an army doctor. Her parents were both Catholics. Rebecca was a practicing Catholic until her son's death during her ex-husband's suicide. Her parents wanted her to study to be a doctor, but she wanted to be a cop.Served most of her policing in the cities, moving back to South Pine following her son's death. Suffers from depression, at times suicidal. No longer has faith in the church, wonders what the point is of anything. Carry's on through life, going through the motions, using police work to keep her mind occupied.A very good police officer. Top of her class at the academy, expert marksman etc. Would have made detective and risen through the ranks but married early, became stifled, held down by her manipulating overbearing husband, a high flying yet crooked police detective.Drinks too much, gets by on painkillers and anti-depressants. Wishes she could close her eyes and not open them again, so she could be with Sam, her son. Not even sure if she would actually see him again, given her loss of faith. Knows that if she commits suicide, she would most likely go to hell anyway--if there is a heaven and hell. Part of the reason she prefers to work alone, tackling anything in everything, unafraid of dying. Perhaps even hoping she might be taken by someone...About the Author:
Matt Cairns grew up reading action and fantasy novels. As an ex-soldier and ex-cop, he needed to write a story he wanted to read. A mix of crime and crack soldier. Bad folk vs. small town. With an element of the unreal... He grew up in such a place: a small military town called Waiouru, where he spent his childhood roaming the local woods and countryside. He soldiered there, and later policed it, often on his own. In the depths of winter Waiouru snows, at times heavily enough to isolate it from the outside world. There’s nothing better, thriller or horror, than snow soaked in blood. This is the setting for Cold Blooded... Cairns has also written a semi-autobiographical nonfiction book titled “How To Live With Anxiety, Depression, and A Little Known Condition Called Cervical Dystonia”, which he describes as a sort of “profile extension”.
