This volume examines, from diverse perspectives, what it means to be a Muslim in Canada. Is it a public or a private identity, and as an identity is it compatible with a secular democracy such as Canada? What relation does it bear to historical, cultural, and ethnic identities? Is a total agnostic or an atheist a Muslim? Is a person who disavows being a Muslim still a Muslim? How do Muslims cope with anti-Muslim bigotry, especially when it goes "official"? What alterations in social and religious practice and what re-thinking of interpretation can one expect in its evolution? These vital questions of faith, culture, survival, and identity are addressed by prominent members of the Canadian cultural and intellectual community. The results are illuminating, sometimes surprising and sometimes--as in the recent niqab hysteria--deeply disturbing.

About the Author:

Nurjehan Aziz is the publisher at Mawenzi House Publishers Ltd. She is the editor of Her Mother's Ashes 1, 2, and 3, and is co-editor of Strangers in the Mirror: In and Out of the Mainstream of Culture in Canada.

Review:

"These pieces are representative of a refreshing collection that does not present a singular, uniform Islamic identity. Rather, The Relevance of Islamic Identity in Canada sincerely vocalizes the tensions and challenges faced on a daily basis by Muslims living in Canada . . . What it reveals is that Islamic identity is a journey, one that every Muslim navigates by themself."
--Herizons

"[A]n enlightening, unsettling, open-ended book, a testament to the resilience and candour of Canadian Muslims."
--Carol Goar, The Toronto Star

Book Description Mawenzi House/Tsar Publishers, 2015. Paperback. Condition: New. Language: English . Brand New Book. edited with an introduction by Nurjehan Aziz The contributors to this volume examine, from different perspectives, the relevance of an Islamic identity in Canada. Does an Islamic identity make sense in a secular country? What does it encompass? How does it relate to national, racial, and ethnic identities? Doesn t it draw a curtain between itself and the rest of a secular nation? Does not this identity in fact give rise to the perception of the Muslim as the Other and to suspicions of non-patriotism, subversion, etc. Is there really a single Islamic culture? Doesn t Islamic identity necessarily erase historical memory and culture? Shouldn t religious faith be something private, in a secular country, in the sense that we don t ask our neighbours or workmates what faith they belong to? CONTRIBUTORS: Mohamed Alibhai (PhD Harvard, former editor Islam in America); Karim H Karim (Carleton University); Monia Mazigh (author, Mirrors and Mirages); Asma Sayed (MacEwan University), Haroon Siddiqui (The Toronto Star), Sunera Thobani (University of British Columbia), and others.
