9781927583142: Rachel's Promise (The Rachel Trilogy)

The story that began in the novel Rachel's Secret continues in Rachel's Promise. With his drunken father out of work, fifteen-year-old Sergei leaves for a factory job in St. Petersburg. But factory life in 1904 Russia is unimaginably difficult, and Sergei soon joins the workers rebelling against inhumane conditions.

Forced to leave Russia because of continuing riots against Jews, Sergei's sweetheart, Rachel, takes the Trans-Siberian Railway across Russia to board a ship to Shanghai. Like Sergei, Rachel must abandon her studies and work to support her family.

Rachel and Sergei are both working to save enough money to move to America for a better life. Rachel's dream of becoming a journalist is encouraged by an unlikely friend in Shanghai, and Sergei becomes ever more embroiled in the politics of revolutionary Russia. Separated by thousands of miles, Sergei and Rachel cling to each other through letters, which become the brightest parts of their lives. Both hope for a future that will see them reunited and their dreams fulfilled.

Re: Publishing's next chapter, Dec. 28

Publishing's next chapter, Dec. 28

Though I see the rise in self-publishing, as a traditional author I'm not a fan for two reasons: most self-published books are not properly edited, and authors pay to get them printed.

My first two books, Rachel's Secret and Rachel's Promise(Second Story Press) were first edited in-house, followed by an outside editor with more than 30 years of publishing experience, and then were copy edited. The final manuscripts were much stronger than the ones I submitted; Rachel's Secret went on to receive a Starred Review in Booklist, was deemed "critical for its underexplored subject" in Kirkus Reviews, and is in its third printing. Good editors are invaluable resources, helping authors become better writers.

The second reason I don't like self-publishing is because I don't want to pay for my books to be printed. It took me a year to find a publisher, but I never considered self-publishing. I wanted the credibility of an experienced publisher behind me and I've never regretted this decision.

Rachel's Promise just received a 4-Star Review from the Manitoba Library Association, and I was awarded a substantial grant from the Canada Council for the Arts to write the third book in the Rachel Trilogy. Soon, I'll be enduring months of gruelling revisions. But I won't complain, because I'll be growing as a writer, and will have my third book published without spending a dime of my own money.
