See It, Sign It, Read It, Spell It! Fast results and great fun to teach for teachers and parents! The book and DVD contains a balanced blend of American Sign Language and Tucker Signing Strategies with easy-to-follow guidelines to help caregivers teach children as young as 9 months to sign words and concepts, the building blocks of reading. As children grow and learn, the transition into signing sounds and blending those sounds together to make words becomes easier. It s a well known fact: The area of the brain responsible for language development shares nerve endings with the part of the brain responsible for motor coordination. No wonder young children love to use their hands to communicate! And that s what makes Reading by Age 5 so revolutionary This proven, research-based program helps children: develop language acquisition, phonemic awareness, and decoding skills, prepare a foundation for reading-comprehension skills, outperform fellow students on a variety of reading and pre-reading measurements, communicates their needs with less stress, bond with caregivers through eye contact and positive interactions, absorb knowledge more readily in other subject areas as well.

Bethanie Hamlett Tucker, Ed. D. of Ocean Isle Beach, North Carolina, has been a professional educator since 1972. She has served as a classroom teacher, a resource teacher, a teacher of gifted students, and is currently a professor of education at Averett University in Danville, Virginia. While teaching at Averett, she researched and developed the Tucker Signing Strategies for Reading a decoding method using sight, sound and movement, which has been highly successful with struggling readers. Through aha! Process, Inc. Bethanie provides training and consulting services for this method.Review:
A number of research studies have confirmed multiple benefits of teaching sign language to infants and children, including: less frustration for infants trying to make their needs known, increased eye contact between children and care givers, and, improved comprehension skills when reading. Companies such as those that wrote Baby Signs, Baby Einstein, and others have developed programs based on these research findings. Reading by Age 5 combines the benefits of sign language for communication purposes with Tucker Signing Strategies for Reading . After learning to sign phrases such as "I love you," "I am proud of you," and "Good job," students as young as three years of age are ready to use the Tucker signs to learn the sounds associated with letters and to blend those sounds to make words. The transition from one sign language to the other is fast and easy, and the learning is fun." --Brenda Boulais, Title I Resource Teacher, Indiana
Testing was just completed in the Head Start program for 4-year-olds. The letter-identification skills of my students this year was the highest it has been in three years. --Carol Sanapaw, Menominee Nation Early Childhood/Head Start, WI
