You Can't Go Wrong With This Funny, Heartwarming Book About Upstate New York

Nero, New York, is a place where the creek used to smell, the mills have moved south and fault-finding is so common that “I don’t blame you” is a compliment.

Upstate New York media personality Bob Cudmore has collected humorous and poignant tales of mill town life in his new book, You Can't Go Wrong: Stories from Nero, New York & Other Tales.

"Cudmore has written a book that does for Upstate New York what novelist Garrison Keillor did for Minnesota," said former Albany Times Union columnist Dan Lynch.

Nero was named for an arsonist Roman emperor because other upstate communities had taken all the good classical names by the time the city was founded. People in Nero speak their own language—“you can’t go wrong,” describes a $2.99 dinner special and “it never fails,” acknowledges the inevitability of life’s catastrophes.

Cudmore and Steve Dunn are co-producers of the WMHT public television documentary Amsterdam: Historic Views of the Carpet City, which the Albany Times Union called an "almost epic treatment" of its mill town subject. When the documentary premiered summer, it broke fundraising records at WMHT. Stories from the documentary featured in Cudmore's book include chapters on Kirk Douglas, Amsterdam's Polish neighborhoods and the city's Italian neighborhood.

Other tales in You Can't Go Wrong are essays on radio, men's clothes and the indignities of middle age.

You Can't Go Wrong was praised by Fr. Joseph Girzone, author of the best- selling Joshua books, who said: “Bob Cudmore has really captured the spirit and atmosphere of this vibrant little place that has lost much of its past grandeur but not its rich tapestry of diverse personalities.”

Artist Jeanne A. Benas of Latham, New York created a dozen illustrations for You Can't Go Wrong. Stories in the audiobook are read by the author, Diane Ward and Bob Noble. The audiobook features original music by John Sciolino of Clifton Park, including an Upstate New York mill town lament--My Old Town, performed by Nor'easter, the musical duo of Sciolino and John Stickles.

Many of Cudmore's stories were originally published in the Opinion section of the Sunday Gazette in Schenectady, the Troy Record, two Amsterdam papers and Talkers, the national talk show trade magazine.

Cudmore hosted WGY radio's nighttime talk show in New York's Capital District from 1980-1993. Cudmore lives in Glenville. He has two grown children.

From the Publisher:

Upstate New York Humorist Publishes Online Sequel

Upstate New York author Bob Cudmore has embraced the digital age, offering an online sequel to his popular humor book.

Earlier this year, Cudmore published funny and heartwarming tales of mill town life in his 116-page book, You Can't Go Wrong: Stories from Nero, New York & Other Tales.

Now, Cudmore is offering a 5,000 word sequel--New Stories from Nero, New York & Other Tales--on his website, bobcudmore.com

"What I ask is that each online reader who prints out the sequel or downloads the file to his or her computer send me a dollar," Cudmore said.

World-famous author Stephen King is making a similar offer on his website, asking a dollar from each reader of online chapters of a new Stephen King novel-in-progress.

"One dollar means a lot more at my company, Nero Publishing, than it does at Stephen King enterprises," Cudmore said, hoping to encourage readers to send in their dollars on the honor system. "Stephen King has taken in over a hundred thousand dollars through his website. I'd be happy with half of that."

A photocopy version of Cudmore's sequel is being offered at a price of $2.99. Checks--either for $1 for downloading online or $2.99 for the photocopy--should be made out to Nero Publishing and sent to Nero Publishing Company, PMB 107, 123 Saratoga Road, Glenville, New York 12302.

"We've tried to keep the prices for these new stories as low as the prices at the greasy spoons in Nero," Cudmore said.

Nero, New York, is a place where the creek used to smell, the mills have moved south and fault-finding is so common that “I don’t blame you” is a compliment.

In the online sequel, readers will learn why Nero native Disease Cotter times his sump pump, hear how a former union boss cleared out a coffee shop and be amazed at Nero's reaction to the TV show Survivor.

The 116-page printed book--You Can't Go Wrong--is available in softcover for $11.95 and hardcover, autographed by the author, for $16.95. An audiobook, narrated by the author, costs $16.95.

Books and audiobooks are available online at bobcudmore.com; by phone at 1-800 929-7889; by mail at Nero Publishing Co., PMB 107, 123 Saratoga Rd., Glenville, NY 12302; and at retail outlets.
