The View from Here

9781929565450: The View from Here

Stuart Kestenbaum, a potter and poet, has been a central figure in the contemporary craft scene for three decades. His position as the director of the Haystack Mountain School of Crafts provides a rare and special perspective on creativity and the human relationships it engenders. His careful observations, warmed by his wisdom and buoyed by his wit, offer unique insights for makers and anyone who enjoys the work of the hand. "The View from Here" offers more than three dozen observations made over the years in the Haystack newsletter and also includes the texts from three speeches, available here for the first time.

Review:

In this handsomely illustrated and presented volume, Stuart Kestenbaum, a potter turned poet (who has been the director of Haystack Mountain School of Crafts in Deer Isle, Maine since 1988) provides a rare and special perspective on creativity and the human relationships it engenders. His well-received books of verse include House of Thanksgiving (2003) and Prayers and Run-on Sentences (2007). Now in this, his latest work, the poet of immense fluency, elegance and deep humanity draws upon his decades-long experience with Haystack to offer keen observations on the art of creating things by hand. --Hamilton College Alumni Review
