About the Author

Katherine Zimmerman, CHT, has been a certified clinical hypnotherapist since 1989. She is certified by several national organizations including the National Society of Hypnotherapists. She presents annually at several international hypnotherapy conferences and presents workshops throughout the United States. She is a guest instructor at Hypnotherapy Training Institute, one of the largest schools in the United States, training students from all over the world.

Katherine is a trainer in the Emotional Freedom Techniques and a Reiki Master. She is an prolific author (10 books) and consultant, lectured for several years through the Speakers Network at the University of California at Davis.

Caretaking

Begin with progressive relaxation...

Allow yourself to relax even deeper now. Feeling so safe and so relaxed in your own private haven.

In the past there have been times when you didn't take care of yourself. Times when you failed to take responsibility for your own feelings, thoughts and actions. Times when you became overly involved in solving problems that belonged to another. Perhaps you've experienced times when you were unable to say no to something that you really didn't want to do.

In a moment I'll ask you to return to a significant memory in your past when you didn't take care of yourself so that you can change the outcome of the event. As you change that past event you alter your future behavior in a positive way. As I count from ten down to one you drift back in time to that memory effortlessly and easily. Your subconscious mind knows exactly how to do this. Ten --- Nine --- Eight --- That's it -- drifting further back now. Seven --- Six --- Five --- Moving back in time effortlessly and easily. Four --- Three --- Two --- Almost there now, at a scene from your past when you didn't take care of yourself. And one. Right there now, in a scene from your past. Notice your surroundings. Are you indoors or outdoors? Are you alone or is someone with you? Watch the scene as if it's on a screen in front of you or, if it feel comfortable and safe, step into your younger body. (Pause)

How do you feel emotionally? (Pause) How do you feel physically?

(Pause) Release any judgments about your feelings, just become aware of them and learn from them. (Pause) In what way did you fail to take care of yourself?

(Pause) What resources do you need to change the outcome in this scene? Bring in any help you want. Perhaps you would like to bring in a parent, relative, an older version of you, a friend or a guide. Your choices are limitless. (Pause)

Now that your help has arrived, move back to the beginning of these event. This time create a new, positive experience and a happy ending. (Pause 30 sec) Finish up your scene now and notice how much better that feels. Become aware of your new, positive feelings about yourself. (Pause)

Return now to your private haven and drift even deeper. (Pause) Drift deeper and deeper and allow the new scene with it's positive happy ending to be absorbed completely. Allow it to become a permanent part of your reality. A part of your personality. (Pause)

Move forward now to a scene in your future. Drifting forward easily and effortlessly to a scene in your future when you have learned to take care of yourself. To a scene in which you're healed. Moving forward now as I count from one to ten. One --- Two -- Three --- Moving forward in time. Four --- Five --- Further ahead with each number. Six --- Seven -- Eight Effortlessly and easily moving ahead in time --- Nine --- Ten. You're right there now, at a scene in your future. Are you indoors or outdoors? (Pause) Are you alone or is someone with you? Watch yourself in this scene. (Pause) How do you feel about yourself? Notice how easily you now take care of your emotional needs. (Pause)

What have you learned about taking care of yourself? (Pause) Notice how your feelings about yourself have improved. You're much better now at taking care of yourself. Absorb all the information you need to learn from this scene. (Pause) Locate the place in your body where you feel these new, positive feelings. (Pause)

Breathe into this positive image. That's it, breathe clear down into your belly. Good. Another deep breath now. That's it. Breathe that new information into every cell, every thought and every emotion. (Pause). . .
