Benjamin Tanner, Ph.D. received a Doctor of Philosophy degree in Microbiology and Immunology from the University of Arizona in 2005, where renowned microbiologist Dr. Charles Gerba served as his advisor. He has published a number of articles in peer-reviewed scholarly journals and presented his research to various audiences in academia, industry, and government. In addition, he has done collaborative research with the United States Environmental Protection Agency, United States Department of Agriculture, and the National Science Foundation Water Quality Center at the University of Arizona. Dr. Tanner has focused his academic and professional endeavors on preventing environmentally mediated disease transmission. Some of his major achievements include helping to define the impact of water quality on the action of disinfectants, evaluating environmental specimens for microorganisms in support of litigation, assessing risks of infection from aerosols generated during the reuse of municipal waste, and assisting with the identification of noroviruses as the cause of gastrointestinal disease outbreaks on cruise ships. Dr. Tanner currently works as a microbiologist for the Clorox Company, where he develops disinfectants that help prevent disease transmission.
