Joseph Brodsky (1940-1996) was born in Leningrad and came to America as an involuntary exile in 1972. After his emigration he published three books of poems in English, two books of essays, two plays, and a long essay on Venice. The Ardis Publishing Company in Ann Arbor, MI, concurrently published his poems in Russian, which were then unavailable in his homeland, in six volumes, now reissued by Slovo/Word Publishers. Brodsky won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1987 and served as Poet Laureate of the United States in 1991-92. His Collected Poems in English will be published by Farrar, Straus & Giroux in August, 2000.Language Notes:
