This Annotated Guide includes not only the Nursing Practice Act but also the practice-related rules and position statements of the BNE and selected other laws and regulations relating to nursing. The nurse's practice must comply not only with the NPA but also with NBE rules as well as other laws and regulations relating to his or her specific practice setting. Patient rights laws are an example of the latter. In fact, BNE rules and such other laws frequently provide more detailed guidance to the nurse than the NPA itself. This Guide addresses only state laws and regulations. Federal law and regulations may also affect the practice of nursing. The inclusion of annotations is the most unique, and probably most important, feature of this Annotated Guide. These annotations are designed to assist the nurse in understanding the implications and significance of a particular law or rule for the nurse's practice. The goal of this Annotated Guide is to create a "nurse friendly" NPA. It is hoped that nurses will find it a useful aid in their day-to-day nursing practice.
