Colonialism and its legacies have emerged as one of the most important research topics in anthropology. Indeed, we now understand that colonialism gave rise to and shaped the discipline. However, the understanding of colonization in anthropology, history, and other fields derives largely from studies of European expansion. In this volume, ten archaeologists analyze the assumptions that have constrained previous studies of colonialism and demonstrate that colonization was common in early Old and New World state societies--an important strategy by which people gained access to critical resources.

Review:

This collection of essays on colonialism, colonies, colonization and empire should be of interest to all archaeologists who work in southern Africa. The essays sharply criticize older approaches for understanding issues of colonialism, thus encouraging readers to rethink the whole process of colonization and the different ways it affected the variety of people whose lives it intruded. ...One theme is the unsuitability of using the concept of colonization as defined by historical archaeologists like Deerz and Orser as though Western European expansion from the fifteenth century onwards is the norm. ..a second theme is the way in which the 'classical' education systems of Western Europe, with their over-emphasis on our undebtedness to ancient Greece and Rome for our 'civilization', have led to incorrect assumptions about the full implications of colonization. A third theme is the inadequacy of world systems theory and methods, and their reliance on core-periphery models, for interpreting early encounters. - Yvonne Brink, University of Cape Town ...a very useful volume for historians and cultural anthropologists as well as for archaeologists....full of thought-provoking detail. --Alice B Kehoe in ANTHROPOS

This volume is a valuable contribution to the study of ancient states and empires.... The focus upon colonies is particularly welcome since it moves beyond sterile typological debates.... --Robert Preucel, Univ. of Pennsylvania

[T]his volume is a timely contribution to the anthropological study of colonialism, and it would be an excellent addition to the syllabus of any class examining colonialism - in ancient or modern contexts. --Matthew Liebmann, Journal of Anthropological Research

A tightly articulated collective product...What is striking about The Archaeology of Colonial Encounters, and makes it very interesting for non-archaeologists, is the extent to which archaeologists are aware of the debates that are taking place in social and cultural anthropology and are prepared to engage in them. --Natacha Gagne, Reviews in Anthropology, 7/2012
