"Funics" is alternative to "Hooked on Phonics" at a fraction of the cost. Parents, tutors, and teachers will find this whole language, phonics program to be fun and easy to use. "Funics" is based upon research findings which have proven the importance of phonemic awareness in reading aquisition. This program is recommended for beginning and remedial students K-4, but can be adapted for use with all age levels, even adult non-readers.

The set includes three workbooks that contain a total of 146 lists of 25 words grouped by common letter sounds (phonemes). Every phonemic sound is typed in bold print to promote memory and easy recognition. Included adjacent to each list are 6-8 often humorous poems that use the words in context. The workbooks contain creative practices of the phonemes through writing, spelling, grammar, and speed reading activities. To determine the speed of the reading of the lists, a stopwatch a a VHS video timer are provided. Such timings are highly motivating since the student will often volunteer to reread the list in order to beat former timings.

Each book comes with a simple to follow guide for all of the optional language arts activies and provides a means for individualizing the program based on student assessment.

As a third and fourth grade teacher I was aware of the public criticism of teachers for not including frequent phonics instruction as a tool for decoding and spelling words. After a review of available phonics programs, I found them to be quite inadequate and boring. Frequently, the workbook pages included minimal practice of phonics patterns. Therefore, I decided to invent a program. It had to be creative, highly motivating, easy, inexpensive and fun to use. With these criteria in mind, I incorporated brain compatible and research based strategies in the design of Funics. What evolved was an exciting method that is highly successful!

Funics is different from other programs on the market. It is comprehensive. No other known program includes auditory, visual and written practices of words through the incorporation of reading, writing, spelling, and creative thinking in this manner. The use of timings of words with similar phonemic patterns in them encourages repetitive practice, a unique method never seen before in phonics programs. The rhymes further reinforce the words by grabbing the reader’s attention in a style that is a cross between the humorous writings of Shel Silverstein and Dr. Seuss, authors loved by young and old alike. The most exciting element of Funics is that it is a mixture of phonetic and whole language approaches. Each technique has credibility so Funics incorporates both styles!

My co-author, Hy Bomberg, is a retired marketing executive from Herman Miller who first began writing stories and poems for his grandchildren. For over a decade, he has volunteered in my classroom and subsequently wrote many rhymes for the word lists. He has been a remarkable inspiration to me and to so many students who now write with a frolicking love of language.

Funics is recommended for students in grades K-4 but it lends itself to many different grade levels and needs. It is beneficial for elementary students in the classroom, in a home-school setting or with a tutor, as introductory or remedial lessons. The word lists and rhymes are also appropriate for remediation in middle school, high school and adult education classes. This program could be easily adjusted or divided up for a variety of levels. Ideally, intensive practice in grades 2-4 would insure a strong phonetic base, and the passing of the book(s) from one grade for use in the next would insure long term review. In this way, Funics will be a vital component like scales are to music.

With the assistance of the poet, Hy Bomberg, and the compilation of the most recent research findings about how students learn, she created a fun, multi-sensory program.
