This is the eighth of thirty-one readers used in the Veritas Press Phonics Museum program. From 605-586 B. C. the Babylonian King Nebuchadnezzar besieged Jerusalem and eventually destroyed the capitol city of Israel. During this time period many Israelites were taken captive and deported to Babylon. One of these prisoners was a godly young man by the name of Daniel who soon fell into favor with Nebuchadnezzar and advanced to become a top advisor to the king. God blessed Daniel's faithfulness. Daniel survived through the reign of three different kings and the Persian conquest of Babylon. While Darius the Mede was monarch of Babylon, Daniel was eighty years old and a trusted advisor to the king. However, other officials hated Daniel and attempted to have him removed. Under the pretense of being loyal to the king, they convinced him to decree that no one should pray or bow down to anyone other than Darius for a period of thirty days, upon penalty of death. The officials knew that Daniel prayed to God three times a day and would not stop because of the king's decree. Predictably, Daniel was arrested for praying to God. Because the laws of the Medes and Persians were irrevocable, Daniel was sentenced to death by being thrown to the lions. After a sleepless night Darius went to the den to see what had happened to his friend. Daniel was unharmed. Because Daniel was falsely accused of treason, the men who had brought the charges were thrown to the lions along with their families. Daniel was saved, and God was glorified.
