This 60-minute practice combines lengthening poses, standing poses to strengthen the spine, and extended meditation. So if you're looking to sweat with some power yoga, Yoga for Longevity is not for you. Instructor Rod Stryker's focus is on relaxing, renewing, and breathing. Sitting on raised platforms amid a Maui field, Stryker and his assistant--who demonstrates modifications--start with a series of stretches: cat's pose, twists, arm rotations. Then it's on to the standard triangle and warrior poses. Stryker finishes up with bridge, leg lifts, and forward bends, followed by an optional 12-minute deep relaxation. Like the other installments in the Yoga Journal series, this one comes with detailed instruction for breath, each body part, and even the mind. Despite, or perhaps because of, this minute focus, novices may feel insecure about getting the poses right. Yoga for Longevity is best for the patient student planning a lifelong practice in yoga. --Kimberly Heinrichs
