Traditionally, a bestiary is a collection of fables about actual or mythological animals. In this collection, however, Lourdes Vázquez has crafted a bestiary of a different sort with a compilation of sensuous poetry in which insects, animals, and strangers reflect her experience as a "Caribbean in exile." The poems resound with humor and grief, turn catastrophe into renewal, and playfully explore what happens in a world where the relationship between humans and beasts is still intact. At times edgy, this poetry is never cold. It is instead vibrantly alive, flowing in a confluence of desire and anger, passion and cool appraisal.

"...Crucial to an interpretation of the text is an understanding of the capricious nature of memory and the various uses to which the poet has put it. A collective representation "of the voices of women subjected to various levels of abandonment, betrayal and confinement..."--Patrick O'Connell, MultiCultural Review, 13:4 (2004).
"With more than typical Latin fierceness, this series of prose poems by a native Puerto Rican twists the traditional meaning of the title word to introduce a new concept of beastliness. As themes and language evolve, the sometimes hidden, often overt, passions that inform personal relationships emerge in all their glory, anguish, and rage."--Sandy McKenney, Foreword Reviews, August 16, 2004.
