The poems and poetic styles in “Nobody Likes a Backseat Driver” were inspired by a diversity of poets including William Shakespeare, Walt Whitman, Elizabeth Barrett-Browning, and Robert Frost. The poet, Erin McGrath, has emulated the great styles and developed her own unique way of manipulating words and sounds to create images which leap from the pages with fervor.
Erin McGrath’s poems have a great grasp on reality. They have all been written from personal experiences with love, laughter, and friendships. She also writes about the outdoors. Erin gives a detailed description of hiking on the Appalachian Trail in her poem entitled, “AT.” Her close friends provided inspiration in her observational poem entitled “Friendly Observations.”
Some of Erin McGrath’s poems are political as well. She takes a feminist stance in her poem “A Woman’s Tomorrow” and reacts to the terrorist act on the U.S.S. Cole in “The Sleeping Lion.”
As a collection, the poems contained herein provide a compelling look into the diversity of insights and styles offered up by a young woman poet, Erin McGrath, in her quest to share both voice and experience with readers of all interests.
