9781931816083: Children of Immortal Bliss: A New Perspective on Our True Identity Based on the Ancient Vedanta Philosophy of India

More than ever before, we in the West are discovering the value and practicality of the teachings of the East. In Children of Immortal Bliss Paul Hourihan, who was a long-time American student of Vedanta, presents the venerable Indian teachings of Vedanta with illustrations and examples that make sense of them to Westerners in particular. In his own inimitable way, he shows how the profound, yet practical, teachings of Vedanta, one of the main schools of thought in Hinduism, give meaning and understanding to our lives.

This study includes an overview of the mysticism of India, and provides a summary of the Bhagavad Gita and the Yoga system of thought. Using the teachings of the Upanishads, Dr. Hourihan covers the main principles of this perennial philosophy and the core concepts that flow from them. The last section demonstrates the universality of these teachings through confirmations from the masters of other spiritual traditions--Lao Tzu, Meister Eckhart, Plotinus, and the Sufis of Islam.

Over a period of 15 years Dr. Hourihan gave many courses and talks on the world's mystical traditions, including the Vedanta philosophy. This book is derived from transcripts of these lectures. With a strong experiential background and lifelong interest in the field of mysticism, along with a Ph.D. in Literature, Hourihan, an American, was well qualified to introduce these ancient teachings to Western readers looking for guidance and personal transformation.

As Robert Ellwood, Distinguished Emeritus Professor of Religion, University of Southern California, states, "Children of Immortal Bliss is a splendid introduction to Vedanta for the average person, presenting this Indian tradition simply, and with the use of ideas and illustrations that will make sense of it to a wide audience."

Early reviewers and readers have called it "a must-read for spiritual seekers everywhere," "a jewel for the spiritually-inspired reader," and "a gem."

The practical application of this philosophy is the means for those of all faiths to realize their identity as Children of Immortal Bliss.

About the Author:

Paul Hourihan, an award-winning author with a Ph.D. in American literature from Boston University, was a serious student of the world's mystical traditions, particularly India's Vedanta philosophy and the teachings of her greatest seers. He was committed to the spiritual path for 45 years and taught dozens of courses on the world's great mystics and spiritual traditions in southern Ontario, Canada.

Review:

Vedanta, a still little-known school of Hindu thought, may be said to have reached its apogee in the first quarter of the 20th century. Modern Vedanta, as interpreted by Swami Vivekananda, emphasizes peace between and among various sects and religions, as well as meditational practices rooted in ancient Hinduism. Hourihan attempts to reintroduce Vedanta to the public, reinvigorating its ideas for a modern audience. --Library Journal, March 1, 2008

"Hear, O children of immortal bliss, you are born to be united with the Lord.
Paul Hourihan, the author of Children of Immortal Bliss, has himself heard this call to realize that blessed state where the spiritual aspirant attains complete absorption in Brahman. This illumined introduction to Vedanta not only covers the essential foundational teachings of this sublime philosophy, but articulates these teachings in a uniquely accessible fashion. Beginning students will appreciate the heartfelt clarity and contemporary sensibility with which the author not only explains but also transmits the ancient teachings.
More advanced students will find this book a joy to read as well. Though the material may be familiar, these great pearls of wisdom are eternally illuminating and the depth of the author's personal sadhana inspires fresh contemplation.
Organized into four parts, Children of Immortal Bliss includes an overview of Indian mysticism, the Upanishads, Brahman, and the universality of spiritual traditions.
Mr. Hourihan was also an academic scholar with a PhD in literature, and this accounts for the clear analytical framework upon which he builds this spiritually uplifting guide for realizing our true identity.
This introduction to fundamental Vedanta truths will serve to inspire the reader to realize and make these truths his or her own. --Anurag Neal Aronowitz, Nectar of Non-Dual Truth, Issue #27, April 2012
