Preep of Old Washington Square is a collection of stories for young readers set in one of the oldest landmarks in Texas, Nacogdoches’ Old Washington Square. A mother cardinal relates the stories in a blend of historic fact and legend to her young son, Preep. The Cardinal family has lived on the square for generations and has witnessed many historic events on Washington Square. The Cardinals were present when the first inhabitants of the area, the Mound Builder Indians, lived there many centuries ago. Long before Texas was a republic, Spanish explorers and priests founded the oldest mission in Texas near the square, and the Cardinals were there. Over the years, the Cardinals watched historic events unfold from their vantage point in the big oak tree. Father Margil, General Sam Houston, and other figures from Texas history are woven into stories that will introduce young Texans to the history of the piney woods.
