The history of California lies like a map before me . . . I have seen it all.
John Bidwell could rightly claim to have seen it all when it came to California history. At the age of 21 he set out with the first overland wagon train of American settlers bound for California. After six months of harrowing adventures across uncharted territory, he arrived at Sutter s Fort and became John Sutter s right-hand man. Bidwell went on to serve in the Bear Flag Revolt, fight in the Mexican War, discover gold on the Feather River, develop his vast Rancho Chico, win election to Congress during the Civil War, and run for president of the United States in 1892. He was a pioneer in exploration, government, and agriculture; his career epitomizes the history of early California.
Generously illustrated with photos, drawings, and maps, this brief biography brings John Bidwell to life, and sheds new light on California history.
