American flyfishing is rooted in the area surrounding New York City, and the author Tom Gilmore's intimate knowledge of this history and more importantly the fishing, will guide you from brook to brook and hatch to hatch. Gilmore hits on everything from the well-known rivers to the out-of-the-way babbling streams only the locals know of. From the Catskills to the Susquehanna, the Lehigh to urban spring creeks, and the Brodhead to the Delaware and much more, this guide will break down the area's tremendous fishing, including the whens, wheres, hows, and more. Each water has its own hatch chart, map, driving directions and thorough description. Residents of this populated and busy area can easily escape the hustle and bustle with this marvelous new book

About the Author:

Tom Gilmore has been president of the New Jersey Audubon Society for the past 27 years. He has received numerous awards and honors, including the Conservation Medal from the Daughters of the American Revolution, and an Environmental Achievement Award from the Annual Environmental Congress for his work on the Freshwater Wetlands Campaign and New Jersey Environmental Lobby's first Environmental Legacy Award for his work on the Highlands legislation. In 2005, Gilmore was recognized by The Star Ledger newspaper (New Jersey's largest daily paper) as Winner of the Year for saving the New Jersey Highlands. Gilmore is also an avid flyfisherman. His first book - False Albacore - was published in 2002, and he recently completed his second book - Tuna on the Fly - which was published in 2006. Having flyfished the tri-state region's trout streams for 40 years, the Flyfisher's Guide to the Big Apple came naturally for Gilmore.

Review:

Author Tom Gilmore, president emeritus of the New Jersey Audubon Society and a regular on the tri-state region's trout streams for the past 40 years, was an excellent choice to compile this encyclopedic collection devoted to fly fishing for trout. His book, in keeping with Flyfisher's Guide protocol, is exceptional in its usefulness, attention to detail, and overall thoroughness. Gilmore and a host of friends, guides, and photographers devoted hundreds of hours to this project - and it shows. The book is divided into three major sections: New York trout streams, Pennsylvania trout streams, and New Jersey trout streams. For each stream, Gilmore provides information on major waters, hatches, and hub cities. Numerous maps, charts, and photographs adorn the entire book. A particularly well-done and unique chapter, What is the Future of our Fishery?, should be required reading for every angler. The book concludes with very helpful lists of fly-fishing clubs, fly shops, guides, and sporting goods stores. --Jack Berryman, Eastern Fly Fishing Magazine, May-June 2014
