The Ninth Man, a modern-day mystery set in Charleston, South Carolina, revolves around a fictional diary kept by a Union spy that explains the disappearance of the H.L. Hunley, a Confederate fishboat that became the world’s first successful combat submarine when it sank a Union ship blockading Charleston Harbor. Russ Berard “retired” from his position as a police detective in Rhode Island to return to Charleston, South Carolina to investigate the deaths of his parents. His father, a liberal Episcopalian minister was murdered in the church office. His mother disappeared on a swim out into the Charleston Harbor after leaving a suicide note. Russ feels that the Charleston police, headed by the younger sister of an old friend, are not doing all they can to solve the mysteries surrounding their deaths. The story becomes ever more complicated as Russ is assaulted in his parents’ home by a dark-clad figure who leaves a mysterious package in the refrigerator.
